A Scene Description Without a Plot Summary

A useful scene description can focus on a change rather than retelling every action. Ask what is different at the end of the scene: a decision, an expectation or the relationship between two people. This provides a centre for your notes while leaving space for the details that matter.

Write a plain account of the starting situation and the ending situation. Between them, select two or three actions that connect the change. Avoid copying dialogue when your own description can explain what a line accomplishes in the exchange.

Consider what remains unstated. A character may evade a question, pause or redirect the conversation. Describe what is visible and audible, then identify your interpretation as an interpretation. Ambiguity can be part of the scene’s appeal rather than a gap to eliminate.

Before sharing the note, add a spoiler warning if it reveals an important development. A thoughtful description should help another reader understand your argument and decide whether to continue. Precision and consideration for the reader belong together.
